British Game Birds and Ostrich Meat

Welcome to Alternative Meats - Deliciously Different

NOT JUST ANY OLD BIRD

NOT JUST ANY OLD BIRD

Lots of different birds here, but not chicken! (With the exception of the Poussin of course!). Game birds offer a really healthy, organic option, and the darker, more gamey meat is full of flavour. Have you tried the biggest bird of all? Ostrich Fillet is a fantastic meat, and is low in both fat and cholesterol.

  • Beer Can Chicken - Or Guiness Fowl?! Or ever-so-pleasant Pheasant?!

It did occur to us to suggest that you could use Guiness and Guinea Fowl for this recipe - just too much of a temptation! On the other hand, what an amazingly simple way of keeping a pheasant lovely and moist! However, the recipe is based on an ordinary everyday chicken and the result is so delicious that we thought it was too good to leave out of our SpiceNTice range. The instructions are all on the inside of the spice sleeve, and really are very easy and straight forward to follow - everything from the other ingredients you will need (which only number four!) as well as your bird of choice. Give it a whirl - it's a fun way to cook and the results are amazing! Learn More

  • Mallard (Oven Ready) Min. 600g

Whole, oven ready wild duck is a real treat. You will find the meat dark and full of flavour, and one whole mallard will usually serve two people. The breasts are not as plump as farmed duck but make up for this with their gamey rich flavour. The Mallard is famously suited to a fruit sauce or jus, such as black cherry or orange and is a really good dish for the winter months. Learn More

  • Oven Ready Grouse Min. 300g

Traditionally commencing on the 12th August in Scotland, England and Wales, the Grouse shooting season continues until 10th December. The grouse is our favourite small game bird and ideal for one portion serving. The meat is heavily perfumed with the heathers that these lovely little birds live and thrive on.

Sadly, this year there has not really been a "Glorious 12th" as it is often called. The raging summer heat has been responsible for the killing-off of the main food source of young grouse, a small grub, and of course the terrible fires on the Moors have destroyed habitats. However, some shoots have still been able to function where they have had more rain, and in those instances they have been shooting the last year's growth of birds, rather than the usual "young" grouse. We have been pleased with the quality of birds so far although we are not sure how long we will be able to source them this year. Learn More

We serve two of these delightful little birds, all oven ready and prepared on the bone, in one pack. • Wood Pigeon Min. 240g

Little Birds! Surprisingly, once oven ready these are quite small - only enough for one single portion, but really full-flavoured with very rich, dark meat. Beware the possibility of lead shot but its worth the risk ... and they make equally good eating whether oven roasted, pan fried or casseroled. Learn More
